Updated: Sept. 8, 10:10 a.m.: This story was updated with information about the cause and estimated damage of Tuesday's fire at a Reston apartment building.

RESTON, VA — Fairfax Fire and Rescue responded Tuesday afternoon after receiving reports of smoke on the 16th floor of a Reston high-rise apartment building, according to a post on the department's official Twitter account.

The occupant of the apartment found and extinguished the fire and then called 911, according to a Twitter post on Wednesday morning.

Fire personnel arrived 12:39 p.m. to the 1800 block of St. Francis St. in Reston.

While the initial cause of the fire was believed to be burning food on a stove, fire inspectors reported that it was caused by the malfunction in a lithium-ion battery pack.

The occupant was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The extent of damage was estimated at $1,500.
