The South Lakes High School Girls Lacrosse team traveled to Fairfax High School on Thursday night for their season opener. The Seahawks came away with a thrilling come-from behind 12-11 victory against the Rebels. The Seahawks fell behind early 5-1 against the Rebels, with the one Seahawk goal coming from Senior Megan Greatorex. To try and get her team back in the game, Seahawks Coach Stevenson called a time-out to settle her team down. Whatever was said seemed to work, as the Seahawks came out of the time-out with more energy and passion. The team was led by the tenacious play of Greatorex and was inspired and motivated by the strong goal-tending from Caitlyn Maginniss allowing the Seahawks to slowing crawl back into the game. Greatorex scored two more goal and Senior Kati Thomas was able to control many of the draws with her aggressiveness and quickness allowing the Seahawks to maintain possession of the ball. Freshman speedster Jesse Lynch scored the Seahawks fourth goal and Kristina Woodward on attack scored on a beautiful crease-roll. The half ended with the Seahawks back in the game but still trailing 5 to 6.
The second half was a see-saw affair with the score being knotted at 9 after Greatorex’ sixth goal and Woodward’s second of the game. The Seahawks offense then took control with nice passes and ball control by Freshmen Lynch and Alexandra Heishman and the rest of the Seahawks attack players and middies. The ball control enabled the Seahawks to score three goal to take a 12-9 lead with five minutes remaining. The goals were from Senior Gabrielle Parisi, Woodward’s third for a hat-trick off a superb pass from Greatorex, and speedy Junior Emma Rygiel for what turned out to be a sorely needed 12th goal.

Down 3, Fairfax, however, would not give up. The Rebels controlled the ball and scored two goal to get within one. The Seahawks defensive unit of Seniors Nicole Salvatore, Ebony Mitchell-Goodfellow, Josie Wnek, and Leah Duffy and sophomores Tori Avilla and Taylor Newman-Farr, backed by numerous spectacular saves from Maginniss, then hunkered down and refused to let Fairfax score the tying goal.
The horn sounded with the Seahawks hanging on for a one goal win. A satisfying but nonetheless exhausting way to start the season.
