Seahawks Cruise to 39-7 Win over Jefferson

Trick play helps South Lakes improve to 2-0 under new head coach Andy Hill.

South Lakes Head Coach Andy Hill doesn't like conservative football.

That style reflects the mentality of his players.

Standing near his own end zone, South Lakes punter Sean Price looked up and saw an opening on the left side of the defensive front. Ninety-two yards later, Price was at the opposite end of the field after scoring on a fake punt to set the tone in the Seahawks their first touchdown in a 39-7 win over Thomas Jefferson.

"I honestly didn't know we were faking it," Hill said. "Sean just checked the defense and usually what we do is we like to read where the defense is playing and Sean saw an opening."

The win improves the Seahawks to 2-0 and gives South Lakes its first win this season in AAA Liberty competition.

After leading 12-0 at halftime, the Seahawks demonstrated a hard-charging rushing attack that wore down the Colonials. In his first game of the season, senior tailback Ja'Juan Jones, returning from a shoulder stinger, darted his way to two second half scores.

"We just got back to what we wanted to do," Hill said.

With 2:27 remaining in the third quarter, Jones hit paydirt again on a two-yard touchdown run to give South Lakes a commanding 26-0 lead.

The Jones show would continue after holding Jefferson to a quick three-and-out, albeit a different Jones. This time it was from sophomore quarterback Rashaan
Jones, who scrambled for a 57-yard touchdown to give South Lakes a 32-0 lead.

The Seahawks closed their scoring with a 17-yard touchdown from converted fullback Mikey Bissonette, who played some at quarterback with 5:45 remaining in the game.

Bissonette's tough play at fullback did not go unnoticed by his coach.

"Mikey played real well," Hill said. "He was physical and got in front of his blockers."

South Lakes finally gave up its first points of the season 119 minutes into the year when Jefferson scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass.

Defensively, South Lakes completely shut down Jefferson. Early in the second quarter, Seahawks senior linebacker Deon King leveled Jefferson quarterback Kevin Karn on a blindside sack that forced Karn to miss the rest of the game.

"Our defense did a nice job," Hill said. "We're still missing a lot of assignments though and we need to lock down those assignments."

South Lakes' next game is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at home against rival Herndon.
