Man In Custody In Sunday Night Sexual Assault In Reston: Update

Fairfax County Police report that they have a suspect in custody in connection with Sunday night's sexual assault in Reston.

Update (Aug. 23, 7:40 a.m.): Fairfax County Police reported on Twitter at 9:28 p.m., on Monday that a man was in custody in connection with Sunday night's sexual assault in Reston. Charges are pending, according to police.

RESTON, VA — Fairfax County Police detectives are investigating a sexual assault that took place Sunday night in a Reston apartment, according to a police release.

Officers responded around 11:50 p.m., to the 2200 block of Lovedale Lane in Reston for the report of a woman being sexual assaulted. The woman told police she was asleep when she awoke to find a man standing inside her apartment. After threatening the woman with what appeared to be a knife, the man sexually assaulted her, according to police.

Police described the suspect as a Black man of unknown age who stood about 5-foot-6. He had a thin build and was wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt, mask, and gloves.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for her injuries, which police described as non-life-threatening.

Police and K9 units searched the area around the victim's apartment building but did not locate the suspect. Police are asking residents to review their surveillance cameras to see if there was video of any suspicious activities in the area on Sunday night.

“Our detectives have been working nonstop on this case," said Maj. Ed O’Carroll, bureau commander, for the Major Crimes Bureau Sex Crimes Unit and Cyber & Forensics. "We’ve developed and are actively following up on several promising leads. I have the utmost confidence the suspect will be identified soon and we will do everything we can to hold him accountable for this heinous crime."
