South Lakes Drubs Yorktown

Hockey club undefeated after 6-2 win.

South Lakes defeated Yorktown 6-2 in a battle of two of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League's top teams on Wednesday at The Lumberyard in Haymarket.

By beating Yorktown, well-established and undefeated team, South Lakes improves to 7-0-1 and sets up a likely league championship game with 6-0 Freedom/Dominion next week.

Yorktown won the opening face off and got in the first shot, which was stopped easily by South Lakes goalie Danny Hilliard.  Yorktown’s Max Horner took a blazing shot from the point past a nice screen to start the scoring. However, it was only two shifts later that Carter Schultz made a nice move on Yorktown’s defense and ripped a shot past goalie Drew Teitelbaum.

With just under a minute to play in the first, Logan Nasr delivered a pass to the tape of his brother, Jackson, and he fired a one timer past Yorktown’s defense and goalie to end the first period with South Lakes ahead 2-1.

The second period featured few real scoring chances until the middle of the 15- minute session. South Lakes scored just before the 10-minute mark, as Michael McDonald fed  Nick Beaulac with a pass inside the hashmarks, and Beaulac drilled it home to bring the score to 3-1. Six seconds later Jackson Nasr fed Logan Nasr a beautiful pass, which he put past the Yorktown goalie.

South Lakes went a man down as Noah Rubin went to the box at 2:05, but survived by working the penalty kill efficiently through a series of keep aways and icings.

In the middle of the third, the Nasr brothers executed the same one timer drill, for South Lakes to go up by another. Yorktown answered with a nice play from Justin Neistroy to close up the difference.

However, the last goal of the game belonged to freshman Tasha Adams, a late-season addition to the Seahawks as she scored her second goal in as many games.

South Lakes remains undefeated (now at 7-0-1) while Washington/Lee and Yorktown, both with records of 7-2, round out the top 3 places in the league. Freedom/Dominion remains undefeated at 6-0, but trails in points due to the lower number of games.

South Lakes and Freedom / Dominion meet Feb. 11  at the Ashburn Ice House at 10:40 p.m.
