South Lakes Hockey Club Begins Season with a Victory

Seahawks beat Braddock/Lake Marshall 6-1.

The South Lakes Ice Hockey Club kicked off the NVSHL season Friday with a 6-1 victory over the newly formed Lake Braddock/Marshall team.

The game, at , featured two seasoned goalies: Danny Hilliard for South Lakes, and Logan Hirka, who formerly played for South Lakes, but now plays for South Lakes' former club partner, Marshall.

South Lakes hockey started in 2009, and  has organized enough players to play on its own, while Lake Braddock and Marshall have put their respective teams together to form a full roster.

From the outset, it seemed that the Lake Braddock/Marshall (LBM) team might be outmanned when South Lakes' captain, Junior Nick Beaulac, buried an early goal behind LBM's Hirka. South Lakes had seven penalties during the first period alone, but still was up 3-0 on two goals from freshman Logan Nasr as the teams went to their benches for the first intermission.

Behind some instruction from South Lakes' second-year coaches, Jeff Beverage and Rob Miller, and LBM's Steve Mancini and Tom Anwyll, both teams settled in to the second period. Shaking off jitters, LBM held South Lakes to two goals in the second. The first was registered by Nasr, for his first hat trick of the season on an assist from Joe Owens. For the next, Owens and Nasr traded spots with Owens taking the goal.
