Southwest Airlines Ending Flights At Northern Virginia Airport

Southwest Airlines said it was discontinuing service to Dulles Airport as part of an ongoing effort to "refine its network" nationwide.

DULLES, VA — Southwest Airlines on Friday announced that it will no longer service Washington Dulles International Airport this summer as part of an ongoing effort to "refine its network" across the country.

In a statement released Friday, Southwest Airlines said it is discontinuing service at Dulles, as well as Chicago O'Hare International Airport, effective June 4.

The airline said it will continue to offer flights at Baltimore-Washington International and Washington Reagan National airports.

According to the airline, Southwest is the largest carrier in the Washington area in terms of passengers served and remains "committed to serving this important market." It will continue to offer a combined 271 departures to 79 nonstop destinations from DCA and BWI.

All affected Dulles frontline employees will have the opportunity to bid for open positions across the Southwest network, the airline said.

Dulles travelers with reservations for Southwest flights are eligible for a refund. Customers can also rebook at another airport or travel standby within 14 days of their original date of travel.
