Students Decorate Principal in Sundae Toppings as Reward for Reading

Students at Aldrin Elementary topped a goal of 3,000 books read in the month leading up to Read Across America Day, earning a sweet reward.

Aldrin Elementary School Principal Shane Wolfe will go to great lengths to motivate his students.

Wolfe struck a deal with Aldrin students during the past school year: If they collectively read 3,000 books in the month leading up to Read Across America Day (otherwise known as Dr. Seuss Day every Mar. 2), they could turn him into a human ice cream sundae.

His plan worked. Aldrin students not only reached their benchmark, but blew past it to the tune of 6,878 books in the allotted time.

Staying true to his word, Wolfe allowed his students to bring their choice of sundae toppings to school on the final day of the school year in June, then let them go to town in transforming him from man to sundae.

“Anything that gets the students excited about reading and learning is fine by me, even if it means I get to wear tons of sticky ice cream toppings,” Wolfe said via Fairfax County Public Schools’ Facebook page.
