Truck Driver Cited For Crash That Damaged Reston Parkway Bridge; Repair Work Continues

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police cited the driver of the truck that crashed into the Reston Parkway bridge on Monday.

RESTON, VA — A driver whose truck crashed into the underside of the Reston Parkway bridge at the Dulles Toll Road on Monday morning has been charged with failure to pay full time and attention, according to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police.

Officers responded 8 a.m. for the report of a truck crash on eastbound Dulles Toll Road and Reston Parkway exit 12. An investigation determined that while traveling eastbound on the entrance ramp, the truck's hydraulic hoist hit the underside of the bridge, according to police.

No injuries were reported and the exact cause of the crash remained undetermined as of Friday afternoon, according to MWAA Police.

"The Reston Parkway bridge sustained damage to a couple of the bridge deck beams and other elements," Alex Liggitt, a communications manager with the Virginia Department of Transportation, told Patch on Thursday. "The left lane of southbound Reston Parkway was closed to prevent vehicles from putting weight on the damaged beams."

VDOT and MWAA share responsibility for maintaining certain parts of the bridge. The damaged portion of the bridge falls under MWAA's responsibility to repair, according to Liggitt.

"We have been actively working with them to facilitate the repair and set a repair timeline," he said. "In the meantime, the team is working on a plan to temporarily repurpose the right-only ramp lane into a right and thru lane to regain some of our original traffic capacity. That will likely occur next week. Our operations engineering team has been monitoring and retiming the signals for both ramps as well as Sunset Hills Road to alleviate some of the queues."

As of Friday afternoon, the south left lane of Reston Parkway at Sunset Hills Road remained closed. Motorists can expect potential delays in the area through at least 3 p.m., on Monday, as bridge repair work continues, according to VDOT.
