Water Mine Expansion to Open to Public with Ribbon Cutting

The ribbon-cutting ceremony and opening of the park's new additions is slated for Saturday, Aug. 1.

One of the area’s most popular summer attractions just got a little bigger and a little better.

Expansion at the Water Mine in Lake Fairfax Park is drawing to a close, and the new additions will open to the public with a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 1, at noon.

The $5.5 million expansion to the park, which is operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority, includes spray pads and climbable play structures, a slide tower for three large body flume slides and the addition of a restroom with family changing rooms.

The expansion project was approved in February of 2013, and construction began in October of 2014.

Construction will resume in the park’s offseason starting this fall, and the Water Mine is planning to introduce individual cabanas, improved shaded seating areas in the grass area around the park, an additional play structure in the spray ground and an opportunity for mobile food vendors in 2016.

The Water Mine was originally developed in 1997 to replace a simple, in-ground swimming pool at the park.
