Water Mine's Summer Season Extended Through End of September

The popular Reston water park normally closes after Labor Day but will stay open on weekends due to its successful $5.5 million expansion.

The Water Mine Family Swimmin’ Hole at Lake Fairfax in Reston has drawn record attendance numbers since introducing its $5.5 million expansion earlier this summer.

As a result, the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) announced this week it is extending the Water Mine’s summer season on weekends through the end of September. The park normally closes following Labor Day weekend, but this year will remain open on all Saturdays and Sundays in September from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

“We know there are lots of families who still want to get wet and enjoy the new attractions,” Park Services Division Director Barbara Nugent said in a county news release. “Keeping the Water Mine open on weekends in September will enable these customers to extend their summer and hopefully, enjoy the warm weather just a little bit longer.”

The Water Mine reached capacity inside the park less than one hour after the grand opening of the park expansion, and after its first week it had set new attendance records that previously dated back to the park’s inaugural week in 1997.

According to the FCPA, attendance throughout the park is now up 80 percent since the expansion.
