Women’s March on Washington: Pink Hat Project Headquartered in Reston

People from all over the country are knitting bright pink hats and mailing them to one house in Reston.

RESTON, VA — Tens of thousands of women from all across the country will be flooding into Washington, D.C. the day after Inauguration Day on Jan. 21, and one house in Reston is serving as a sort of makeshift headquarters for the movement.

That's the location of the "Pink Hat Project" (not it's popular name, which is an allusion to derogatory comments made by Donald Trump in a video released during the campaign). The project is a challenge to knit, crochet and sew 1.17 million -- the total capacity of the National Mall -- pink hats to keep everyone's ears warm and make a statement at the same time during the huge march. The project has provided a pattern on their website for a "Power Hat," and is asking dedicated knitters to mail them to a home at 12033 Lake Newport Road in Reston.

Accompanying each hat is a form that reads: "Dear wearer of this hat, this hat is made by (name) (city) (state). A women's issue I care about is (blank). If you want to give your hat wearer an opportunity to respond, please put your contact info here (blank).

The purpose of the project, according to their website, is to "provide the people of the Women's March on Washington D.C. a means to make a unique collective visual statement which will help activists be heard," as well as provide people who can't physically be there a way to support women's rights.

More than 180,000 people have pledged to attend the Women's March on Washington, according to the event's Facebook page. The event's organizers emphatically deny that they are an anti-Donald Trump movement, but with the event happening the day after his inauguration and the project's official name clearly making reference to Trump's derogatory comments about women, it's fair to say that most in attendance will not be Trump supporters.
