About the Book:
In pursuit of a more ethical way of eating, Zackary Vernon moved to Boone, North Carolina. While volunteering, working, and interviewing people related to the ethical food movement, he struggled with extreme views on both sides of the issue. He wondered: can you be an ethical eater without fully sacrificing pleasure and joy? While there are no easy answers, open_in_newVernon, a professor of English at Appalachian State University, offers ways for us to fail better as we consider how to eat more ethically in the future. He is also the author of the debut novel, Our Bodies Electric, editor of Ecocriticism and the Future of Southern Studies, and co-editor of Summoning the Dead: Essays on Ron Rash.
About the Author:
Zackary Vernon lives in Boone, NC, where he's on the faculty at Appalachian State University. He is the author of the debut novel, Our Bodies Electric, editor of Ecocriticism and the Future of Southern Studies, and co-editor of Summoning the Dead: Essays on Ron Rash. His creative nonfiction has been published in magazines and journals, such as Salvation South, The Bitter Southerner, North Carolina Literary Review, and Carolina Quarterly. He's also on Instagram @zackvernon33, where you will find pictures of food, mountains, a dog named Turnip, and occasional drawings that look like they've been done by a precocious child.
 Dr. Jessica Martell is an interdisciplinary scholar who specializes in literature, food, film, and the environment. She is the open_in_newFulbright-Queen's University Belfast Scholar in Irish Studies, 2025-2026. She is the author of Farm to Form: Modernist Literature and Ecologies of Food in the British Empire (University of Nevada Press, 2020), which investigates the relationship between the industrial food of empire and the emergence of literary modernisms in Britain and Ireland. The evening’s keynote address will be given by Dr. Gonzalo M. Quintero Saravia, a senior Spanish diplomat, author of several books on 18th-century Spanish American history, and a former Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University.

Honoring Spain's Contributions to American Independence

For nearly the entirety of our history, Americans have been arguing about George Washington and slavery. Drawing on research from his latest book, historian John Garrison Marks will explore how generations of Americans have remembered, forgotten, manipulated, and wielded Washington’s entanglements with slavery over the past 250 years. As both a prolific enslaver for his entire life as well as the emancipator of more than 120 of the people he enslaved, George Washington’s complex relationship with slavery has vexed Americans for centuries. Time and again, we’ve struggled to agree upon slavery’s place in Washington’s legacy. In this lecture, Marks will explore how abolitionists, politicians, educators, museum professionals, descendants of slavery at Mount Vernon, and countless others have all fought to shape our collective memory of George Washington and slavery over the last two centuries—and what those fights reveal about our ongoing struggle to reckon with the past.
Dr. John Garrison Marks is a historian and writer exploring the United States’ histories of race, slavery, and public memory. He earned his Ph.D. in history from Rice University. Marks currently works as the Vice President of Research and Engagement for the American Association for State and Local History. His writing has appeared in the Washington Post, TIME, Smithsonian Magazine, and elsewhere. He is the author/editor of three books,&nbsp;Race and Nation in the Age of Emancipations&nbsp;(edited with Whitney Nell Stewart);&nbsp;Black Freedom in the Age of Slavery: Race, Status, and Identity in the Urban Americas; and&nbsp;Thy Will Be Done: George Washington's Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory.

About the Author:
Margot Douaihy, PhD, is a poet, crime writer, and assistant professor at Emerson College. She is the author of the lyrical hardboiled mysteries Scorched Grace and Blessed Water, both published with Gillian Flynn Books (a Zando imprint) and both named a "Best Crime Novel of the Year" by The New York Times (2023 and 2024). The third mystery in her series, Divine Ruin, published in January 2026 and was an American Booksellers Association Indie Next Pick, a Publishers Weekly Pick, and named a Best Debut of the Month by CrimeReads. Margot is an active member of the Radius of Arab-American Writers, the Queer Crime Writers, the Sisters in Crime, and the Mystery Writers of America.
John Copenhaver is an award-winning author whose latest novel, Hall of Mirrors, was named a New York Times Crime Novel of the Year and won the Left Coast Crime Award for Best Historical Mystery. His earlier books include Dodging and Burning and The Savage Kind, which won the Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBTQ Mystery. He co-edited Crime Ink: Iconic and serves on the board of International Thriller Writers. A founding member of Queer Crime Writers, he teaches at VCU and mentors in the University of Nebraska Omaha’s MFA program. About the Book:
Both an epic history and an intimate family story, a startling account of the lives of Black cops in one Midwestern city.
Amid the fervent protests over police killings in 2020, the reporter Wilbert L. Cooper returned to his hometown of Cleveland to profile the president of a Black police organization called the Black Shield. The group had aligned itself with activists calling for reform, but its president was notorious for having shot a young unarmed Black man years earlier. As Cooper explored the question of whether Black cops can create the kind of radical changes in policing that Black people are calling for, he was also welcomed by the members of the group in a different, more complicated capacity: as Sergeant Will Cooper’s son.
For Cooper, this assignment was personal. His parents are retired Black Cleveland cops; his sister was a Cleveland cop; on his mother’s side, there has been a Cleveland cop in the family since 1950. In unearthing the dramatic histories of the Black Shield and his own family, Cooper tells the intertwined stories of the two: his relatives, whose lineage traces back to the Great Migration and who chose policing because it was one of the few stepping stones to economic security and status in a segregated city; and an organization that, over decades of cultural and political upheaval, has cycled endlessly between rebellion and acquiescence.
An intimate, bold work of literary nonfiction, The Black Shield is an urgent exploration of the complex duality of the Black cop. Cooper grapples with a knot of contradictions: Is the Black officer a sign of progressive change, or of a system that shifts its appearance without changing its outcomes? How to reconcile the fact that policing helped lift his family out of poverty while it has kept its knee on the necks of his people? Fearless and singularly powerful, The Black Shield gives us an American story about race and power that has never been told before.
About the Author:
Wilbert L. Cooper grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. He studied journalism at Ohio University an earned a master's degree in publishing at New York University. He has written for outlets such as The Guardian, The New York Times, the Marshall Project, and The Wall Street Journal. His Vice documentary The Cleveland Strangler was nominated for a National Magazine Award. In 2024, he was the recipient of the Richard J. Margolis Award. A teenager’s idyllic summer of freedom is shaded by the growing weight of responsibility and a recognition of the fallibility of the adults around him.
Actor and director Ed Burns returns with the continuing fictionalized saga of growing up on Marlboro Road.
In this his second Marlboro Road novel, Edward Burns continues the tale, loosely based on his own childhood. The Guardian called Burns’s first novel, A Kid from Marlboro Road, “keenly felt…vivid…a tender-hearted complement to the Irish-American stories that Burns captures in his films.” The boy that was twelve in the first novel is now fourteen, about to turn fifteen, when he will enter an all-boys Catholic High School. He spends a lot more time with his best friends, Mark, T-Mac, Zeppo, Louie and Cakes than he does with his given family.
But for all their newfound freedom, the kids find the larger world of Valley Stream and the neighboring towns a more dangerous place than they’re prepared for, where dads can hurt you when they reveal their own emotional scars and the local beach might be ruled by gangs of older kids you might have to defend yourself from. In this larger world our narrator starts to see even his own family as not so perfect.
The Marlboro Road Gang is a novel where darker currents start to invade the innocent pastorale of childhood, and where a boy might lose his bearings in the confusion.
About the Author:
Born in Woodside, Queens and raised on Long Island, EDWARD BURNS has made fourteen feature films as a writer-director-actor and starred in many films, including Saving Private Ryan. Burns’ first film The Brothers McMullen, premiered at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, winning the Grand Jury prize. The film also won "Best First Feature" at the 1996 Independent Spirit Awards. In 2015, he published Independent Ed, an inside look at his two decades as a pioneer in independent filmmaking, and in 2024 he moved to Seven Stories Press for his debut novel, A Kid from Marlboro Road, projected to be the first of several novels based on his childhood memories and the local story of Irish Americans in New York City and Long Island. The Marlboro Road Gang is the second novel in the series. What is MHSS? MHSS is a Medicaid community-based program that helps adults with mental health challenges build the skills needed to live independently and maintain emotional and daily stability. Services are provided in the home and in the community by qualified professionals. MHSS supports individuals who need help with managing symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or PTSD; improving medication consistency; developing coping and emotional regulation skills; strengthening daily living skills such as cleaning, hygiene, nutrition, and routines; and building healthy social connections. MHSS also assists with organization, budgeting, employment readiness, and navigating community resources such as housing and benefits. A Step-Down Service MHSS is often used as a step-down after psychiatric hospitalization, Community Stabilization, CSB crisis services, residential programs, IOP/PHP, ED discharges, or case management referrals.
