As part of the Virginia Museum of History &amp; Culture's 250th Initiative, join the VMHC and The Queen Sofía Spanish Institute for a special evening commemorating the Spanish politicians, generals, and merchants who played a vital role shaping the outcome of the American Revolution.&nbsp;
The evening’s keynote address will be given by Dr. Gonzalo M. Quintero Saravia, a senior Spanish diplomat, author of several books on 18th-century Spanish American history, and a former Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University.
Highlights include:&nbsp;
Remarks from Spanish dignitaries. Lecture from renowned expert Dr. Gonzalo M. Quintero Saravia. About the Book:
In pursuit of a more ethical way of eating, Zackary Vernon moved to Boone, North Carolina. While volunteering, working, and interviewing people related to the ethical food movement, he struggled with extreme views on both sides of the issue. He wondered: can you be an ethical eater without fully sacrificing pleasure and joy? While there are no easy answers, open_in_newVernon, a professor of English at Appalachian State University, offers ways for us to fail better as we consider how to eat more ethically in the future. He is also the author of the debut novel, Our Bodies Electric, editor of Ecocriticism and the Future of Southern Studies, and co-editor of Summoning the Dead: Essays on Ron Rash.
About the Author:
Zackary Vernon lives in Boone, NC, where he's on the faculty at Appalachian State University. He is the author of the debut novel, Our Bodies Electric, editor of Ecocriticism and the Future of Southern Studies, and co-editor of Summoning the Dead: Essays on Ron Rash. His creative nonfiction has been published in magazines and journals, such as Salvation South, The Bitter Southerner, North Carolina Literary Review, and Carolina Quarterly.  Dr. Jessica Martell is an interdisciplinary scholar who specializes in literature, food, film, and the environment. She is the open_in_newFulbright-Queen's University Belfast Scholar in Irish Studies, 2025-2026. She is the author of Farm to Form: Modernist Literature and Ecologies of Food in the British Empire (University of Nevada Press, 2020), which investigates the relationship between the industrial food of empire and the emergence of literary modernisms in Britain and Ireland. Eating on a Mountain at the End of the World with Zackary Vernon

For nearly the entirety of our history, Americans have been arguing about George Washington and slavery. Drawing on research from his latest book, historian John Garrison Marks will explore how generations of Americans have remembered, forgotten, manipulated, and wielded Washington’s entanglements with slavery over the past 250 years. As both a prolific enslaver for his entire life as well as the emancipator of more than 120 of the people he enslaved, George Washington’s complex relationship with slavery has vexed Americans for centuries. Time and again, we’ve struggled to agree upon slavery’s place in Washington’s legacy. In this lecture, Marks will explore how abolitionists, politicians, educators, museum professionals, descendants of slavery at Mount Vernon, and countless others have all fought to shape our collective memory of George Washington and slavery over the last two centuries—and what those fights reveal about our ongoing struggle to reckon with the past.
Dr. John Garrison Marks is a historian and writer exploring the United States’ histories of race, slavery, and public memory. He earned his Ph.D. in history from Rice University. Marks currently works as the Vice President of Research and Engagement for the American Association for State and Local History. His writing has appeared in the Washington Post, TIME, Smithsonian Magazine, and elsewhere. He is the author/editor of three books,&nbsp;Race and Nation in the Age of Emancipations&nbsp;(edited with Whitney Nell Stewart);&nbsp;Black Freedom in the Age of Slavery: Race, Status, and Identity in the Urban Americas; and&nbsp;Thy Will Be Done: George Washington's Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory.

About the Author:
Margot Douaihy, PhD, is a poet, crime writer, and assistant professor at Emerson College. She is the author of the lyrical hardboiled mysteries Scorched Grace and Blessed Water, both published with Gillian Flynn Books (a Zando imprint) and both named a "Best Crime Novel of the Year" by The New York Times (2023 and 2024). The third mystery in her series, Divine Ruin, published in January 2026 and was an American Booksellers Association Indie Next Pick, a Publishers Weekly Pick, and named a Best Debut of the Month by CrimeReads. Margot is an active member of the Radius of Arab-American Writers, the Queer Crime Writers, the Sisters in Crime, and the Mystery Writers of America.
John Copenhaver is an award-winning author whose latest novel, Hall of Mirrors, was named a New York Times Crime Novel of the Year and won the Left Coast Crime Award for Best Historical Mystery. His earlier books include Dodging and Burning and The Savage Kind, which won the Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBTQ Mystery. He co-edited Crime Ink: Iconic and serves on the board of International Thriller Writers. A founding member of Queer Crime Writers, he teaches at VCU and mentors in the University of Nebraska Omaha’s MFA program. About the Book:
Both an epic history and an intimate family story, a startling account of the lives of Black cops in one Midwestern city.
Amid the fervent protests over police killings in 2020, the reporter Wilbert L. Cooper returned to his hometown of Cleveland to profile the president of a Black police organization called the Black Shield. The group had aligned itself with activists calling for reform, but its president was notorious for having shot a young unarmed Black man years earlier. As Cooper explored the question of whether Black cops can create the kind of radical changes in policing that Black people are calling for, he was also welcomed by the members of the group in a different, more complicated capacity: as Sergeant Will Cooper’s son.
For Cooper, this assignment was personal. His parents are retired Black Cleveland cops; his sister was a Cleveland cop; on his mother’s side, there has been a Cleveland cop in the family since 1950. In unearthing the dramatic histories of the Black Shield and his own family, Cooper tells the intertwined stories of the two: his relatives, whose lineage traces back to the Great Migration and who chose policing because it was one of the few stepping stones to economic security and status in a segregated city; and an organization that, over decades of cultural and political upheaval, has cycled endlessly between rebellion and acquiescence.
An intimate, bold work of literary nonfiction, The Black Shield is an urgent exploration of the complex duality of the Black cop. Cooper grapples with a knot of contradictions: Is the Black officer a sign of progressive change, or of a system that shifts its appearance without changing its outcomes? How to reconcile the fact that policing helped lift his family out of poverty while it has kept its knee on the necks of his people? Fearless and singularly powerful, The Black Shield gives us an American story about race and power that has never been told before.
About the Author:
Wilbert L. Cooper grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. He studied journalism at Ohio University an earned a master's degree in publishing at New York University. He has written for outlets such as The Guardian, The New York Times, the Marshall Project, and The Wall Street Journal. His Vice documentary The Cleveland Strangler was nominated for a National Magazine Award. In 2024, he was the recipient of the Richard J. Margolis Award.
