VIENNA, VA — Traffic pattern changes are scheduled to begin at the Nutley Street and Interstate 66 interchange from Friday, Oct. 1 to Monday, Oct. 4, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The interchange is being rebuilt as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project that will add I-66 Express Lanes between the Beltway and University Boulevard in Gainesville. This weekend, VDOT will be opening two new loop ramps from Nutley Street South to I-66 East and from Nutley Street North to I-66 West. Travel lanes on Nutley Street will also be shifted.

Here's what drivers can expect in the first days of October:

  • The permanent loop ramp from Nutley Street South to I-66 East will open during nighttime hours on Oct. 1 on the right-hand side near where the previous loop ramp had been located. Drivers on Nutley Street South will no longer be able to make a left turn at the temporary traffic signal to reach I-66 East.
  • The northbound lanes of Nutley Street will shift to the west side of the bridge over I-66 during overnight hours of Oct. 1. Northbound and southbound traffic will have two lanes each. Pedestrian access over I-66 will be on the west side of Nutley Street between Virginia Center Boulevard/Marshall Road and Saintsbury Drive/Swanee Lane.
  • The permanent loop ramp from northbound Nutley Street to I-66 West will open on the right-hand side near where the previous loop ramp had been located during early morning hours of Oct. 4. Drivers on northbound Nutley Street will no longer be able to make a left turn at the temporary traffic signal to reach I-66 West.
  • The current left turn ramp from Nutley Street North to I-66 West will be permanently closed around 8 p.m. on Oct. 1 for paving work. Traffic will be directed farther north, stay left at the intersection with Virginia Center Boulevard, make a U-turn, and stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.

Work is weather dependent and would be rescheduled for inclement weather.

In future parts of the project, the reconstructed Nutley Street and I-66 interchange will have two roundabouts for vehicles entering and exiting I-66. This project segment will also connect the shared-use path being built along the I-66 corridor from Dunn Loring to Centreville with planned bicycle and pedestrian improvements around the Vienna Metro and shared-use bath into the Town of Vienna.
