Fire At Woodson Complex In Fairfax Damages FCPS Administrative Offices

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — An early morning fire on damaged at least one building in Fairfax County Public Schools' Woodson Complex off of Main Street on the eastern border of Fairfax City on Sunday. The complex is home to the school district's Office of Facilities Management, which houses FCPS' central operations, grounds operations, receiving, and food service.

Fire units from Fairfax County and Fairfax City responded around 3 a.m. for the report of a fire at Woodson High School in the 9500 block of Main Street, according to a video update from Deputy Chief Bill Betz posted on the Fairfax County Fire Department's official Twitter account.

Firefighters arriving on the scene found a large volume of fire coming from an administrative building adjacent to the school.

"We initially had personnel go into the interior to try to put the fire out, but due to the significant fire conditions in an older building, units were pulled out," Betz said, adding that operations then switched to a defensive posture.

Firefighters had brought the blaze under control by 8:25 a.m., according to a county fire department post on Twitter. At that time, fire fighters were continuing to work on hot spots in the building.

No firefighters or civilians were injured, according to Betz. The department believes that the building was vacant at the time of the fire. Inspectors will begin working to determine the cause of the blaze once they are able to enter the building.

City of Fairfax Police closed Whitacre Road between Main Street and Trapp Road, as well as Main Street itself, for a period of time to allow firefighters to respond to the fire. Both Main Street and Whitacre Road later reopened to traffic.

Fire crews were still at the site around noon Sunday, cleaning up and packing their gear.
