AlexRenew Enterprises Switching to Monthly Billing

Regular monthly bills to Alexandria Renew water customers will start arriving after Oct. 1, and will look like previous AlexRenew bills.

Alexandria Renew Enterprises’ residential customers will begin to receive regular monthly bills for wastewater treatment services beginning this fall, according to a news release. For the past two years, bills were sent out quarterly. Alexandria Renew Enterprises is the former Alexandria Sanitation Authority.

The change was prompted by Virginia American Water’s (VAW) recent decision to begin billing on a monthly basis for the drinking water it provides City residents. Alexandria Renew relies on VAW water usage data to calculate its customers’ wastewater treatment charges. By switching to monthly billing, Alex Renew’s customers will be able to better manage their household budgets, ensure accurate statements, and detect unusual water usage spikes that could be the sign of a leak inside their homes.

Alexandria Renew CEO Karen Pallansch described the advantages and benefits associated with monthly billing. “Moving to monthly billing will make budgeting easier for our residential customers, who already receive most of their bills each month. It’s also a great early warning system to help our customers spot water usage that seems abnormally high. In many instances, a leaky toilet or pipe is the culprit. Finding and fixing the problem as soon as possible can save both significant money and water,” she said.

Regular monthly bills to Alexandria Renew customers will start arriving after Oct. 1, and will look like previous AlexRenew bills. The first monthly bill will cover wastewater usage charges from the last quarter though the current bill date. For example, if your bill ends in September, you will be billed as normal for that quarterly period. Your October invoice will be a transition month, and you will be billed based on days of service during that month. Your November bill will be the first full monthly bill.

After that, all AlexRenew bills will be monthly. Bills will continue to include a City sewer maintenance fee, which is also based on water usage. Customers with an Automatic Payment account with AlexRenew will be automatically switched to monthly billing and need not do anything.

The change to monthly billing will not affect AlexRenew’s rate structure or plan. Alexandria Renew’s rate plan, which was approved in October 2013, calls for a small increase of 13 cents per 1,000 gallons used starting Oct. 1.
