Blockbuster to Close Hundreds of Stores

300 Blockbuster locations will close this year; Alexandria's last two locations on the west end closed in 2012.

Blockbuster will be closing 300 of its 800 locations in the coming weeks, according to a report in The Denver Post.

The move follows 500 store closings last year, which included the Blockbuster at Bradlee Shopping Center (that storefront is still vacant) and the Blockbuster on Beauregard St. (a Noodles & Co. is occupying part of that space now).

Parent company Dish Network announced 3,000 employees will lose their jobs in the process.

The stores targeted reportedly include underperforming sites, as well as locations where leases are set to expire, but the company has not released a list of specific sites.

The two closest Blockbuster locations to Alexandria's West End are at 7448 Little River Turnpike in Annandale and at Kingstowne Center. The future of those stores is unclear.
