Builders Begin to Demolish Safeway on King Street

Store closed July 13 and is expected to reopen in 2014.

Demolition of the Bradlee Safeway is underway. The reported $11 million renovation of the grocery store, which closed July 13, will continue through most of 2014, a Safeway spokesman said.

Some of the highlights of the new store at 3526 King St. in Alexandria: "It's going to be a much larger store, in the neighborhood of 55,000 square feet, with some sheltered parking, some parking below the store, at grade —we're not digging any holes," a store spokesman said earlier this year.

Expect to see larger produce, deli, seafood, wine and floral departments, he said, as well as a likely Starbucks and Bergmann's dry cleaners.

"As much as we hate to go away, it's painful for people, we understand that, we will come back with a lot of fanfare," he said.
