Flash Flood Warning Issued for Alexandria, Parts of Fairfax County

Areas impacted include Huntington, Annandale, Lake Barcroft, Bailey's Crossroads.

The National Weather Service in Sterling has issued a Flash Flood Warning for: East Central Fairfax County in Northern Virginia and the City of Alexandria:

  • Until 8:45 PM EST.
  • At 6:44 PM EST, gauges on Backlick run and Cameron run were rapidly rising. Flood stage is expected to be exceeded due to heavy rain of one to one and a half inches, with impacts mainly on the Fairfax County side of the stream. Street flooding in Huntington is likely.
  • Some locations that may experience flooding include: Huntington, Groveton, Annandale, Lake Barcroft, Lincolnia. Jefferson Manor and Baileys crossroads. This includes Holmes run below Lake Barcroft and Cameron run at Huntington.

There are reports of a rescue of a car on Navajo Drive and Cherokee Avenue, south of Lincolnia, trapped in flood waters; the area is near a creek called Indian Run. The Springfield Franconia metro parking garage was also experiencing flooding Wednesday night, according to a report by NBC-4.

Stay away or be swept away. River banks and culverts can become unstable and unsafe.

A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property. Do not attempt to cross swiftly flowing waters or waters of unknown depth by foot or by automobile.
