GI Film Festival in Alexandria, Waterfont Commission, Progress on Carluccios' Restaurant, Route 1 Corridor Advisory Meeting & More This Week

A roundup of upcoming events and activities this week related to business and real estate, compiled by the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership (AEDP).

In addition to the G.I. Film Festival- one of the major Alexandria attractions this week- there is also a packed event schedule ahead this week, featuring Waterfront planning, Carluccio's, Route 1 Corridor, and more. Here is our roundup:

The GI Film Festival (May 19-26) will hold a number of events at Alexandria venues including the Old Town Theater and the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Visit the official event website to view the schedule and purchase tickets. Come out and support this exciting series of events, held here in Alexandria, in the official Year of the Veteran! 

The May Del Ray Business Association (DRBA) monthly lunch will feature Faroll Hamer, Director of Planning and Zoning. She will look into her crystal ball and predict where Del Ray will be five years from now, ten years from now (Mon. 5/19 at 11:30 AM, Mt. Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Ave., more information).

The Alexandria Waterfront Commission will hold their regular monthly meeting where items of interest include the Committee's consideration of a recommendation on Landscape Design & Flood Mitigation, update on the Unit Block King Street, and regular project updates (Tues. 5/20 at 7:30 AM, City Hall, Sister Cities Conference Room).  

The Old Town Business and Professional Association (OTBPA) will hold their regular Board meeting (Tues. 5/20, 9:30 AM, AEDP Offices, 625 N. Washington St., Suite 400).

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will host their monthly Small Business Roundtable, where the topic of discussion will be "Cultural Sensitivities: How to Reach & Connect with Different People" (Tues. 5/20, noon, AEDP/SBDC Offices, 625 N. Washington St, Suite 400).

The Queen Street Area Business Association (QSABA) will hold their monthly membership meeting where they will discuss membership recruitment (Tues. 5/20, 5:00 PM, The Durant Center, 1605 Cameron St).

The Oakville Triangle and Route 1 Corridor Advisory Group will hold their second meeting to continue providing guidance to assist in developing Plan principles regarding potential land uses, open space, sustainability, transportation and connectivity issues, and potential community benefits, among other topics (Tues. 5/20, 7:00 PM, Mt. Vernon Community School Cafeteria, 2601 Commonwealth Ave).

The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce will host their monthly Business After Hours, with light refreshments, fun and networking with business professionals (Weds. 5/21, 5:30 PM, Virtue Feed & Grain, 106 S. Union St., registration required).

The Board of Architectural Review (BAR)- Old and Historic District will hold their regular monthly meeting where items of interest include request for alteration and signage for Carluccio's restaurant at 100 King Street, request for demolition of 210 The Strand, an existing metal warehouse building also known as the Alexandria Yacht building, and a work session to discuss the proposed development project at 1604 - 1614 King Street- King Street Gateway (Weds. 5/21 at 7:30 PM, City Hall, Council Chambers).  

The public is invited to the West End Transitway (Corridor C) Alternatives Analysis/Environmental Assessment kick-off meeting to learn about the proposed Transitway system along the Van Dorn/Beauregard corridor, which will provide a robust high-capacity transit option between the Van Dorn Metrorail station, Shirlington Transit Center, and the Pentagon using a combination of dedicated and shared lanes (Thurs. 5/22, 4:00 - 8:00 PM, Landmark Mall meeting room, 2nd floor).

iMAGINE Alexandria is teaming up with the Torpedo Factory Art Center to host a special event called, "Inspired By..."which will bring together members of the commercial arts and fine arts communities. The event will feature six artists (three commercial and three fine). Presenters will discuss what inspired them to create a particular piece of art, the influences that impacted their work, blockages they faced along the way and how their final product varied from their original vision. After all six artist present, a moderator will lead a brief discussion with the audience on artistic inspiration (Thurs. 5/22 at 6:00 PM, 816 N. St. Asaph St., registration required, attendance capped at 75 people).
