Seeking Mentors, Professional Men Wanted

Transform a young child's life: participate in sports, woodworking lessons and so much more with the Space of His Own Mentoring Program

Creative mentoring program Space of His Own is seeking mentors for the 2015-2016 school year; the program begins next September.

SOHO serves 5th-grade vulnerable youth in Alexandria and Arlington, pairing compassionate and resourceful men with program participants. More than a role model, and more than a friend, a SOHO mentor supports and guides youth to success.

For the past two years, we have not met program capacity (12 mentor/mentee pairs) for the boy’s program because we have not been able to find the mentors. Last year alone, over 20 youth were waitlisted for the program. Help us bring in new mentors to support Alexandria boys in need!

SOHO mentors and youth meet weekly in a group setting to enjoy dinner together and work on a carpentry project. Each mentor is paired one-on-one with a child as they construct bookshelves, build shadow boxes, make clay lamp bases, and much more. Mentors and mentees also participate in physical activity and a series of team-building exercises to help develop the SOHO community.

At the culmination of the year, mentors pair up to renovate each youth’s bedroom or space using all of the projects that they’ve created together.

Mentors commit to attending the program one night a week from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at Jefferson Houston Elementary School. This year, the program runs on Wednesday evening, but the night for next year is TBD.

If you are fun, dedicated, and eager to help a child in need, we want to hear from you!
