Lincolnia Senior Center Evacuated After Chemical Scare

About 50 were evacuated "as precautionary measure" after cleaning fluids were possibly mixed improperly.

A senior center operated by Fairfax County in Lincolnia was evacuated Monday morning at about 10 a.m. after cleaning chemicals mixed to create a smell that alarmed the staff.

The center is located 4710 N. Chambliss in the Lincolnia area of Fairfax County.

"We think cleaning fluids were mixed improperly, and there was a heavy smell to it," said Bruce Patrick, operations director for the region.

About 50 people were evacuated, "as a precautionary measure," Patrick said, for 30 minutes while fire and rescue officials from Fairfax County, assisted by officials from the City of Alexandria, responded, Patrick said.

Just after 11 a.m., Patrick reported that everyone evacuated was back in the building.

The multi-service facility offers adult day care and more to Fairfax County residents age 55 and older.
