VDOT: New Traffic Pattern on Seminary Road at I-395 Bridge

In late October, the eastbound lanes of the Seminary Road Bridge will close and all traffic will be shifted to the westbound lanes.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) was scheduled to close the two inner lanes of the Seminary Road (Route 420) Bridge today (Monday) over I-395, and direct traffic to the two outer lanes – one in each direction, according to a news release from VDOT. Here’s more about the traffic pattern from the release:

This lane reduction is necessary for crews to demolish the median in the center of the bridge, and begin construction of a new Seminary Road bridge. Motorists heading east or west on Seminary Road across I-395 will continue to have full access to the rotary-level interchange over I-395.

In late October, the eastbound lanes of the Seminary Road Bridge will close and all traffic will be shifted to the westbound lanes – one lane in each direction - so the eastbound span can be demolished and rebuilt. This traffic shift and lane reduction will be in place for approximately six months, at which time two-way traffic will be switched to the new span while the westbound span is rebuilt. The new bridge, which will restore all four lanes, is expected to open in fall 2015.

The new Seminary Road Bridge and ramp connecting the I-395 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes and Seminary Road are scheduled to be completed in fall 2015 and are intended to help ease traffic congestion associated with the nearby Mark Center. Other elements of this project include a new pedestrian bridge over I-395 and northbound auxiliary lane between Duke Street and Seminary Road.
