Investigators believe the fire started after a candle was left unattended in a basement bedroom.

The fire broke out around 11:45 p.m. on Monday at a home in the 16000 block of Toms River Loop in Dumfries. The residents learned of the fire when a smoke detector activated in the basement.

"Had it not been for working smoke detectors, this incident could have resulted in tragedy," Prince William County Fire and Rescue System Chief Thomas LaBelle said in a news release.

Labelle urged residents to ensure that their home is equipped with functioning smoke detectors. Authorities noted that smoke detectors are one of the best ways to prevent a fire from claiming a life.

The Prince William County Fire Marshal's Office noted that residents should be cautious when using candles.

"Candles should only be used if they are enclosed and provided with a base that prevents it from being tipped over," fire officials said in a news release. "Candles should also be kept away from small children and pets."
