Candidate Collapses At Prince William Supervisors' Meeting

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — A candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates collapsed on Tuesday while speaking to the Prince William County Board of Supervisors.
First responders took the candidate, John Stirrup, to an area hospital for treatment.
Prince William County deputies cleared the board's chamber while first responders tended to Stirrup. After a recess, the Prince William County supervisors decided to postpone the meeting to Thursday evening.

On Tuesday night, Stirrup's team posted an update on Facebook about the candidate's condition.
"John is now feeling much better, resting and even telling a few dad jokes to the hospital staff," the update said. "He and Heidi are incredibly grateful for the first responders, medical team, and all those who have reached out and offered prayers and support."

Stirrup had previously served on the Prince William Board of County Supervisors representing Gainesville as a Republican. He is in the midst of a campaign to represent the 21st district in the Virginia House of Delegates.
"We would like to extend our heartfelt concern and well wishes to the affected resident and their family during this difficult time," Prince William County officials wrote on the government's Facebook page. "The health and safety of our community members are of paramount importance to the Board of County Supervisors, and we are committed to providing a safe environment for all attendees."
After first responders took Stirrup to the hospital, the county supervisors agreed to end Tuesday night's meeting. They were originally scheduled to discuss changes to the county's budget proposal.
The meeting will resume on Thursday night with a public comment period.
