Chinn Park Regional Library will be closed from May 17 through June 8 so that the circulation desk can be remodeled. Sandra Oliver, the Chinn Park Regional Library Branch Administrator, said the “significant” renovation will include new lighting, better access, more visibility and ease of use for staff and library patrons.

The library system chose to remodel in May before they gear up for summer programs. “May is traditionally a slower month for us,” Oliver said.
Oliver said the Potomac Community Library, which offers the same level of programming as Chinn Park, will be the back-up library for Chinn patrons during the three weeks of remodeling.

Oliver said she expects that Chinn’s closing will send a fair number of patrons to the Potomac Community Library, but the library system will take steps to ease the pain. “It will definitely impact Potomac Library. That’s why some of our staff will actually be stationed there while we’re closed.”
Library patrons will be able to return books to the outside drop-off at Chinn Park Regional Library during the remodeling, but fines and fees will have to be made online or at another library in the library system. People who put books on hold will need to pick them up at Potomac Community Library.
Funding for the circulation desk project came from proffer funds collected by the Prince William Board of County Supervisors from several rezoning projects in the Coles and Occoquan magisterial districts. Proffers are contributions developers make to offset any adverse effects their developments might have on the community.
Along with the circulation desk remodel, there will be a new leisure area where people can read and pick up books they have on hold. The Friends of the Chinn Park Regional Library will provide funding for some of the furniture for the new leisure area, which will be available once the circulation desk project is complete.
