Community Raises Money For The Young Marines At Golf Tournament
Six Sergeants Major of the Marine Corps helped raise money for the Young Marines at a golf tournament at the Medal of Honor Golf Course.
The Young Marines, a national youth organization, raised $45,000 at its annual golf tournament held September 24, at the Medal of Honor Golf Course at Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia.
For more than a decade, vendors who are in town for the Modern-Day Marine Expo, members of the Marine Corps League, and supporters of the Young Marines, have been playing golf to raise funds for the 501c (3) youth education and service program for boys and girls age eight to 18.
The sold-out event of 144 golfers joined six Sergeants Major of the Marine Corps including the current Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Ronald L. Green; the 12th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Gene Overstreet; and the 17th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Michael Barrett. Overstreet and Barrett are current members of the board of directors of the Young Marines.

In addition, patriotic vocalist Dave Bray performed the national anthem and actor and producer Scott Levy signed autographs.
The NEC golf team won first place with a score of 55. Team NEC consisted of Peter Hebert, John Shroeder, Gary Gordon, and Rob Anderson.

The Young Marines is a national non-profit 501c (3) youth education and service program for boys and girls, age eight through the completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork and self-discipline, so its members can live and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
Since the Young Marines' humble beginnings in 1959 with one unit and a handful of boys, the organization has grown to 270 units with 9,000 youth and 2,600 adult volunteers in 40 states, the District of Columbia, Japan, and affiliates in other countries.
