PINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — A teenager from Dumfries was arrested on Thursday after he was accused of assaulting a family member earlier this week, according to the Prince William County Police Department. The 17-year-old, who was not named by authorities, is charged with malicious wounding.

The incident was reported to the police department on Monday, Aug. 2. Originally, authorities investigated it as a "domestic incident," according to the department's daily incident report.

Through their investigation, officers determined that an argument between the teen and a 43-year-old family member escalated to violence. Police claimed that the 17-year-old assaulted his family member during the argument.

The 43-year-old family member was left with "serious injuries to the face," authorities said. First responders took the victim to a nearby hospital to receive medical treatment.

Officers said that the teen was not present when they arrived on the scene on Monday. After their investigation, the police department obtained juvenile petitions and a detention order against the teen.

Dumfries police officers located the teen on Thursday, Aug. 5 and he was taken into custody. He is charged with one count of malicious wounding. Authorities said his court date was pending.
