WOODBRIDGE, VA — A house caught fire on Roundtree Drive in Dale City on Wednesday morning, the fire department said. The blaze displaced seven adults and a child.

No injuries were reported in the fire, authorities said. The house sustained extensive damage, and the county's building official declared the home as unsafe to occupy. The displaced residents are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

When fire crews arrived at the home in the 5000 block of Roundtree Drive around 10 a.m., they saw fire and smoke showing from the front of the house. The residents had already evacuated, the fire department said in a report.

The residents noticed the fire before the smoke alarms activated. Firefighters said the bulk of the fire was located in the home's basement before they extinguished it.

Authorities said the fire marshal's office was still on the scene on Wednesday morning determining what sparked the fire.

"The Fire Marshal’s Office strongly recommends the installation, maintenance, and regular testing of smoke detectors in all residential properties," the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue said in a news release. "A working smoke detector provides adequate warning, allowing you to safely escape the dangers of a fire."
