Labor Day in D.C. Region: 850,700 People on the Roads
Travel in the region is up for a fourth year in a row, according to AAA projections. 87 percent will be in cars.

Planning one last trip this summer? Yeah, you and 850,659 other people in the D.C. region.
That’s the latest projection for Labor Day travel from AAA, a slight increase from the 847,400 traveling in 2014.
“It is axiomatic, Labor Day marks the end of the summer holiday travel season and Washingtonians are in the mood to travel this summer,” said John B. Townsend II, AAA Mid-Atlantic’s Manager of Public and Government Affairs.

If you’re going to be on the road — there will be company. AAA predicts 87 percent of those travelers this year will be on the highway.
And cheap gas prices may drive that number of road warriors up even higher at the last minute, according to Townsend.

“While automobile travel is expected to increase slightly by 0.5 percent, in theory and in practice recent declines in gasoline prices will continue through Labor Day,” he said. “If so, we could see an increase in last-minute holiday weekend travel.”
