UPDATE: Officers shot a man who shot at them with a rifle in an apparent "ambush" Sunday night at a home in Woodbridge: PWC Police.

WOODBRIDGE, VA—Officers shot a man who repeatedly began shooting at them with a rifle in an apparent "ambush" Sunday night at a home in the 1100 block of Laurel Street, according to Prince William County Police. The man, 29, was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, and reportedly lives at the home where the shooting occurred.

On Monday, police released photos of the police cruiser that was hit during the shooting. In a statement, PWC police chief Barry Barnard said, in part: "These photos of the police cruiser demonstrate the great risk and danger our officers faced when they responded to the call that evening. The officers showed immense courage and bravery through their actions as they encountered immediate and unprovoked gunfire from the suspect who was armed with a rifle."

Shortly after 5:30 p.m., police responded to the area for a "shots fired" call. As they arrived, a man began shooting at them with a rifle, and a police cruiser was his multiple times. Police returned fire and hit him in the upper body. Other homes in the area also were hit. No other injuries were reported. Police are working to find a motive, and the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on paid leave. The shooter remains hospitalized.
