Marine Corps Base Quantico Reopens Following Lockdown

Base officials issued the all-clear at 2:30 p.m., reopening the base after nearby police activity prompted it to close.

QUANTICO, VA — Marine Corps Base Quantico has reopened after officials issued a shelter-in-place order due to nearby police activity, according to a post on the base's Facebook page.

A statement from officials said base security received a report of shots fired behind the commissary near Lyman Park shortly after 12:30 p.m.

Officials locked down the base shortly after, and base personnel and residents were told to shelter in place while authorities investigated. All incoming and outgoing traffic to the base was stopped during the lockdown.

After investigating and speaking to witnesses, authorities said a car backfiring likely caused the noise.

Officials gave the all-clear and reopened the base at 2:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported, officials said.
