The chase began around 9:30 p.m. on Monday on eastbound I-66 in Fauquier County. A Virginia state trooper said he tried to pull over a motorcycle, but the rider ignored the lights and sirens and sped away.

The trooper chased the motorcycle as he went into Prince William County and exited from I-66 to southbound I-95, the police report said.

"As state police positioned their vehicles around the motorcycle to contain it near the Dale City Rest Area, the motorcyclist tried to maneuver around one of the state police vehicles to get away," authorities said in a news release. "However, the motorcycle sideswiped the patrol vehicle which caused the motorcyclist to lose control. The motorcycle ran off onto the shoulder and crashed."

Multiple state troopers had to slam on their brakes to avoid crashing into the motorcycle, authorities said. The troopers collided with each other and triggered a chain reaction crash involving three other vehicles on I-95.

First responders took the injured drivers and passengers to area hospitals for treatment.
