If convicted, Mohamed and Hassan could face up to five years in prison, based on Virginia's sentencing guidelines.
The crash occurred around 10:45 a.m. on May 2 in the 12600 block of Westridge Drive in Woodbridge. Authorities said Hassan and Mohamed left their 8-year-old son at home without supervision.
"Shortly after the parents left the residence, the victim walked out of the home and into the roadway where he was struck," the police department said.
Authorities said the driver who hit the boy remained at the scene after the crash.
