The Prince William County Police Department reminds residents about a potential child safety issue: Each year, several incidents occur in the county where children fall out of open windows in their homes.
Help avoid falls this year! The Police Department reminds parents and other caregivers that window screens are designed to keep bugs out, not to keep children in. They can give way to the weight of a child.

The National Safe Kids Campaign recommends the following:
- Move chairs, cribs, beds and other furniture away from windows and draperies. Remember that children can fall from windows opened as little as 5 inches.
- Install window guards on all windows in your home. Be sure that these guards meet ASTM standards for emergency egress in the event of a fire. Never rely on window screens to prevent falls.
- Never leave young children alone on changing tables, sofas or other furniture.
- Open windows from the top, if possible, rather than from the bottom and check that window screens are secure.
