WOODBRIDGE, VA — A burglar broke into a home in Woodbridge on Monday afternoon and shot an occupant during a struggle over a gun, according to the Prince William County Police Department.

The victim, a 51-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to the lower body. His injuries are not life-threatening, authorities said.

The police department has not identified any suspects.

The shooting occurred before 1:45 p.m. on Monday in the 13400 block of Orangewood Drive in Woodbridge.

Before the shooting, the victim was inside the home when he heard a loud noise near his front door. While investigating, he saw that a man had broke the glass screen and was trying to force his way into the home, according to the police report.

The victim confronted the burglar, who then pulled out a gun. The two men struggled over the firearm, police said. The gun went off during the struggle and single round hit the victim. The suspect fled the area before police officers arrived.
