CVS Manager Calls Cops On Black Woman Over Coupon: Video

CHICAGO, IL — A video of a white store manager calling police on a black woman in Chicago has gone viral, with various versions of it racking up millions of views worldwide on Facebook and YouTube. The woman said the manager accused her of using a fraudulent coupon. CVS has issued an apology and said that the two employees who were involved are "no longer employed by CVS Health."

Camilla Hudson posted the cellphone video of manager Morry Matson calling police Friday night at the CVS at 6150 N. Broadway in the city's Edgewater Glen neighborhood on the Far North Side.

In a Facebook post, Hudson said that she tried to use a manufacturer's coupon for a free product, and Matson accused her of counterfeiting. He said he'd never seen a coupon like it and then called police, Hudson said.

The video shows Matson shaking as he answers questions about her on the phone. He describes her to police as African American, and she responds, "I'm Black. Black isn't a bad word."

In her post, Hudson said three officers responded to Matson's call and she spoke with them before they left the CVS.

Matson is running for 48th Ward Alderman on Chicago's Far North Side. According to his campaign website, he's president of the LGBTQ conservatives' group Log Cabin Republicans of Illinois. Patch tried to contact Matson for comment through his campaign page but did not hear back by deadline.

In a statement, CVS said its region director contacted Hudson personally and apologized.

"CVS Pharmacy does not tolerate any practices that discriminate against any customer and we are committed to maintaining a welcoming and diverse environment in our stores," CVS said in a statement. "We have firm non-discrimination policies in place to help ensure that all customers are treated with respect and dignity. Profiling or any other type of discriminatory behavior is strictly prohibited."

CVS said it conducted an investigation into the incident, and as a result, the two employees involved no longer work for the company.
