WOODBRIDGE, VA — Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center (SNVMC) in Woodbridge is partnering with Smart Beginnings Greater Prince William to launch a Books4Babies program at the Women's Health Center at the hospital. As part of the program, every newborn leaves the hospital with a children's book and a developmental milestone guide.

Books and resource materials are offered in both English and Spanish. The resources will include suggested books for parents to read to their children, including a flyer from the Prince William Public Library System promoting the "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten" program.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advocates for reading regularly with young children. Prior to the babies leaving the hospital, SNVMC trained volunteers will educate families about the importance of reading aloud beginning in infancy. Most volunteers have extensive experience in teaching and working with young families. The program is currently composed of six SNVMC auxiliary volunteers.
