Virginia Lottery Winner Believed She Had Won Only $100

Sharon Fentress-Bussey said she didn't realize she had won $100,000. She told her cousin, "It's probably only $100."

WOODBRIDGE, VA — A Woodbridge woman won $100,000 in the Virginia Lottery's Cash 5 game, matching all five numbers in the Jan. 14 drawing to win the game's top prize, the lottery announced Wednesday. Sharon Fentress-Bussey said she selected the numbers on her ticket using her son's birthday and some other numbers.

The winning numbers were 4-7-9-23-32. She bought her ticket at Shoppers, located at 4174 Fortuna Center in Dumfries. Fentress-Bussey, who works in the civil service, said she didn't realize how much she had won at first. She told her cousin, "It's probably only $100."

Fentress-Bussey told the Virginia Lottery that she has no immediate plans for her winnings.

Cash 5 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11 p.m. The odds of winning the $100,000 top prize are 1 in 278,256.

Fentress-Bussey lives in Prince William County, which received more than $39.7 million in Lottery funds for K-12 public education in fiscal year 2019. The Virginia Lottery generates more than $1.7 million per day for Virginia's K-12 public schools.

The lottery generated a record $650 million for Virginia's public schools in fiscal year 2019. An additional $6.5 million in unclaimed prizes was deposited in the Virginia Literary Fund during the fiscal year, which provides low-interest loans to localities for public school construction, renovations and technology upgrades.
