Virginia Sales Tax Holiday To Run Aug. 7-9 (ICYMI)
In Case You Missed It: Here's how to enjoy three days of tax-free back-to-school shopping, and donate supplies to needy students.

It’s not most people’s favorite shopping spree of the year, but the commonwealth of Virginia is making back-to-school shopping a little less dreadful with the return of Virginia’s Back to School Sales Tax Holiday.
This year’s Sales Tax Holiday will take place from Aug. 7-9 statewide. It traditionally begins on the first Friday of every August.

School supplies and back-to-school clothing are among the main items included in the sales tax exemption. However, each school supply must cost under $20, and each item of clothing must cost less than $100.

On the list, there are school standards like binders, book bags and dictionaries, as well as musical instruments, compasses and more. Clothing includes robes, rain coats, flip-flops, formal wear and more.
Not on the list: Cosmetics, yarn, sunglasses, umbrellas, wallets, watches and more.
Also included in the weekend-long tax exemption are hurricane and emergency preparedness items, as well as EnergyStar and WaterSense products.
SPARK Collecting School Supplies
In addition, SPARK, the education foundation for the Prince William County Public Schools, is collecting school supplies to help ensure that all students have the back-to-school basics they need. Bring your items to the Kelly Leadership Center, 14715 Bristow Road, Manassas, VA 20112, off Dumfries Road (Route 234) in Independent Hill. The center will accept donated school supplies from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Most-needed items include backpacks, three-ring binders, tabbed dividers, folders with pockets, spiral notebooks, loose-leaf paper, colored pencils, pencil boxes/bags, tissues, hand sanitizer, marble composition books, ink pens (blue or black), No. 2 pencils, washable markers, crayons, highlighters, glue/glue sticks, rounded scissors, index cards and graph paper.
