VRE's Morning Trains Delayed By Storm Damage to Rails: Media Report

System runs behind schedule on both Manassas and Fredericksburg lines.

Tuesday night’s thunderstorms caused delays for commuters on the Virginia Railway Express in getting to work on Wednesday morning.

The heavy rains displaced a pile of rocks that support a stretch of tracks in Fairfax County used by VRE trains, radio station WTOP reported. The tracks are between the Franconia-Springfield station and Alexandria.

The CSX railroad, which owns the tracks, sent inspectors to check the damage and ensure the tracks were safe, and the VRE trains were allowed to run at 5:30 a.m., WTOP reported.

A VRE spokesman told WTOP that the track problem will not affect service this afternoon.
