Mahmoud Amin Mohamed Elhassan, 26, originally from Sudan, was sentenced to 11 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A Woodbridge man was sentenced Friday to more than a decade in jail for attempting to aid the Islamic State (ISIS or ISIL) and lying to the FBI, according to U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente, Eastern District of Virginia.

Mahmoud Amin Mohamed Elhassan, 26, originally from Sudan, was sentenced to 11 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release.

He pleaded guilty Oct. 24 for aiding a fellow ISIS sympathizer, Joseph Hassan Farrokh, 28, who was sentenced in July to more than eight years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiring to provide material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization.

Both men spoke openly with each other about supporting ISIL and violent jihad, with Farrokh saying on Oct. 2, 2015, that he had no patience and wanted to go right away and “chop their heads.”

Both had made elaborate plans to travel to Syria — plans that were being monitored by U.S. officials.
