80-Year-Old Man Was Justified In Fatally Shooting Family Member In Woodbridge: Police
An 80-year-old Woodbridge man will not face criminal charges after authorities said he was justified in fatally shooting a family member.

WOODBRIDGE, VA — An 80-year-old Woodbridge man will not face criminal charges after fatally shooting a 60-year-old family member in March, the Prince William County Police Department announced. Authorities determined that the shooting was justified.
Police identified the deceased family member as Frank Adolf Mateo of Woodbridge. He died at an area hospital after the shooting on March 5.
The shooting occurred around 8:50 p.m. on March 5 at a home in the 14500 block of Fullerton Road in Woodbridge. The police department said two family members had an argument that escalated and led to the shooting. Authorities reported that Mateo was shot once in the upper body.

When police officers arrived at the scene, they detained the 80-year-old man and provided first aid to Mateo. More first responders took Mateo to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries.
"The investigation revealed there were no indications the family member involved in the death, identified as an 80-year-old man, provoked the altercation with the deceased," the police department said on Thursday.

After consultation with the office of the commonwealth's attorney and based on the final autopsy report, authorities determined that the shooting was justified. No criminal charges will be filed, and the police department will not publicly name the 80-year-old man.
