Woodbridge Polar Plunge Into Potomac Follows Forecasted Snow

Participants will brave the cold and take a dip in the Potomac River in Woodbridge to support Special Olympics.

WOODBRIDGE, VA — When Polar Plunge participants take a dip in the frigid Potomac River on Saturday, they will be remembering it's for a good cause — to benefit Special Olympics.

Prince William County's 2024 Polar Plunge will happen Saturday at Leesylvania State Park, 2001 Daniel K Ludwig Drive, Woodbridge, VA. Prince William County Police will be among the participants.

Due to a winter storm advisory, the morning's 5K Run/Waddle & 1-mile Fun Run has been cancelled. The Polar Plunge is still scheduled, as it will happen after the expected winter weather.

Those entering the Potomac River could be dealing with the aftermath of snowfall. Prince William County and other parts of the region are under a winter weather advisory Friday night into Saturday morning. Central and southeastern Prince William County could see 2 to 4 inches of snow, although isolated snowfall up to 6 inches is possible in heavier snow bands.

The schedule for the Polar Plunge includes check-ins and registration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., food trucks opening for sales at 11 a.m. and plunge festivities with a costume contest, announcement and plunge teams at 1:15 p.m.

There is a $10 entrance fee to Leesylvania State Park, but Polar Plunge participants, volunteers, sponsors and vendors receive free parking. Attendees should follow signage to the boat ramp.

Special Olympics is a sports organization serving children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization provides training and athletic competitions, giving athletes the chance to be active, build friendships and more.
