Worker Dies After Exposure To Live Electrical Wire in Dumfries

A worker from Richmond died this week after his lift basket was exposed to a live electrical wire in Dumfries on Tuesday afternoon.

WOODBRIDGE, VA — A man died on Tuesday after he was exposed to a live electrical wire in Dumfries, according to the Prince William County Police Department. Authorities identified the man as Edwin Romero-Hernandez, a 46-year-old Richmond resident.

A 22-year-old woman was also exposed to the wire. She suffered injuries, but is expected to survive, police said.

First responders from the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue responded to the 16900 block of Porters Inn Drive in Dumfries to investigate a report of an electrical fire. When they arrived on the scene, rescue personnel found two workers in a lift basket, according to a report from the police department.

Rescue personnel determined that the two people, who were later identified as Romero-Hernandez and the unnamed 22-year-old woman, were working in the area when their lift basket contacted a live electrical wire. The wire's power was then shut off, authorities said.

Fire and rescue personnel used an aerial ladder to remove the victims from the lift.

First responders flew Romero-Hernandez to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The woman was also taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment. She is expected to survive, according to authorities.

Thousands of Woodbridge residents lost power during the incident on Tuesday afternoon. Several traffic lights were also impacted by the outage, police said. Members of the Prince William County Police Department directed traffic in areas that lost electricity.


All power was restored before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, authorities said.
