TACOMA, WA — Former Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Stickland announced a run for Washington's 10th congressional district Thursday morning. Strickland, a Democrat, served as Tacoma's mayor for two terms, from 2010 to 2018. Her announcement comes amid the pending retirement of Rep. Denny Heck, who plans to leave Congress at the end of his fourth term next year.

The 10th district covers most of Thurston County, portions of Pierce County, and a small area of Mason County. It was created in 2012, following the results of the 2010 Census.
Rep. Heck has represented the district since its creation.

Since leaving the mayor's office, Strickland has served as President and CEO of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce. Endorsements listed on Strickland's campaign website include former Gov. Chris Gregoire and current Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards.
