Gov. Jay Inslee To Undergo Hip Surgery Monday

Inslee is expected to be out of the office for at least a week. Secretary of State Kim Wyman will be acting governor during the operation.

OLYMPIA, WA — Governor Jay Inslee will undergo hip surgery Monday and is expected to be out of the office for at least a week, his office announced Thursday. The surgery is scheduled to begin Dec. 9 at 7 a.m. Secretary of State Kim Wyman will serve as acting governor until approximately 1 p.m. Inslee will resume governor duties following the surgery and continue to work during his recovery.

"On Monday, I am trading in a 1951 model hip joint for a 2019 model," Inslee said in a statement sent to the media.

According to the governor's office, the timing of the surgery and recovery will mean a slightly different budget rollout this year. Budget Director David Schumacher will unveil the proposed supplemental budget the week of Dec. 16, and the governor's staff will work to distribute that information to the public and media.
