'Scary' Bathrooms: State Ferry Survey Reveals Likes, Dislikes

Washington State Ferries released the results of a passenger survey Tuesday. Most people are satisfied, but some are not.

SEATTLE, WA - A survey of over 4,000 ferry riders says that more than three-quarters of riders are satisfied with the conditions, speed, and ease of the state's fleet. But about 16 percent of those surveyed were dissatisfied in some way, which is up one percentage point over 2017.

The state conducted the online survey between March and April and asked riders to reflect on their experiences over the winter season. The survey was released to the public Tuesday at a meeting of the Washington Transportation Commission.

The least popular route was Southworth to Vashon Island (one of the shortest ferry rides in the state). Meanwhile, the Seattle-Bainbridge route was said to be the "best value" of any ferry route.

The survey also collected qualitative responses from ferry riders. Some of the more interesting comments revealed serious dissatisfaction with bathrooms aboard ferries and at terminals.

"This is all being improved so really at this point doesn't matter, but the Seattle bathrooms are filthy and scary and I hate to have use them and mostly will wait till I'm on the ferry," one person wrote of the terminal bathroom in Seattle.
