Today's riddle: What is the longest word in the dictionary? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Call for Applications for Project Grant Program (fundsforngos.org) — Artists and organizations who create arts, cultural, or heritage projects in Bellevue can now apply for City of Bellevue Project Grants ranging from $3,000 to $7,000, with applications due October 10. Funded projects must be publicly accessible, take place in Bellevue, and serve local residents or visitors, with clear restrictions on political, religious, or fundraising events. Eligible applicants include individuals, groups, and businesses, with an optional BelRed bonus grant available.
2. Route 550 Bus to End Service Aug. 29 as 2 Line Takes Over Bellevue-Seattle Trips (downtownbellevue.com) — Bellevue riders who rely on Route 550 between downtown Bellevue and Seattle need to switch to the 2 Line light rail when the bus is discontinued on Saturday, August 29. Trains now provide frequent, traffic-free trips across I-90 with stations at Bellevue Downtown, South Bellevue, Mercer Island, and into Seattle, while an upgraded Route 556 and free downtown shuttle help connect neighborhoods to the new rail spine.
3. Bevel Is Set to Become the Tallest Mass Timber Office Building in North America (yankodesign.com) — A new 12‑story mass timber office tower called Bevel is set to open this month in downtown Bellevue, aiming to be the tallest mass timber commercial office building in North America. The project emphasizes exposed wood, natural light, and biophilic design while widening sidewalks and improving pedestrian connections around the site. Developers are targeting top-tier green certifications and full electrification to showcase a next‑generation sustainable workplace.
4. Claire Wong Black Receives Ninth Circuit's John P. Frank Award (uscourts.gov) — Bellevue recently hosted the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference, where Hawaii attorney Claire Wong Black received the prestigious John P. Frank Award for her extensive service to the courts and community. The honor, presented during the July 20 opening session in Bellevue, recognizes her pro bono work, civic education efforts, and leadership roles within the federal legal community.
5. Scott Kinkel (valleyrecord.com) — Friends and neighbors may want to know that Scott Edward Kinkel, a longtime Snoqualmie Valley resident, died July 31 at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. The 63‑year‑old Mount Si High graduate spent three decades working at SanMar in Issaquah and was known for his love of fishing, family time, and his infectious laugh. He will be interred at Mount Si Cemetery, with donations suggested to the Snoqualmie Valley Food Bank.
